While many college music majors start out pursuing their on-stage dreams, they often end up finding success in other industries. Developing Listening Skills

In the strictest sense, a musician’s ability to listen applies only to how he interprets changes in the sounds around him. He listens for the change in tempo and beat to know when to alter his own playing or singing. Similarly, he watches the motions of his bandmates to take his cues to act. However, those skills, once honed, can be applied to business. A musician is best equipped to look at the environment and know how to respond to the cues he witnesses around him.

Diversifying Interests

An education in music doesn’t just focus on one genre, but forces students to broaden their horizons. They’re asked to develop an ear for rock, pop, R&B, dance, classical, and many more types of music. As entrepreneurs, they take that hunger for diversity and apply it to starting a business, A music major knows the value of learning more than just his one part of the composition, so he strives to learn about the different aspects of the business he’s pursuing. This gives him much more knowledge, which he’ll use to his advantage.

Taking It on the Road

Musicians are travelers by nature and they have to be, if they expect to sell any albums. If they don’t hit the road, staging live concerts in cities around the country, their album sales will suffer. As an entrepreneur, it’s smart to get away from the business and hit the road as well. By interacting with clients, you can get a better sense for what they need and you’ll be better able to fill that demand.

Developing Originality

In music, being original and unique is essential to success. Musicians have to be brave in expressing themselves creatively, boldly creating new music that will have a voice of its own. The same is true of entrepreneurs. Even where they may be offering a product similar to others on the market, they still have to put their own unique spin on it. If they can’t add something new and different, they won’t attract the customers they need to succeed.

Hopeful entrepreneurs may benefit from an education in music, because of the skills and abilities this type of training promotes. While it’s also important to have an education in business, music can teach some of the practical traits necessary for success in any business venture. Perhaps the best business degree program will incorporate music lessons into the curriculum.
